Pre-Operative Information – Preparing For Surgery
A nurse will contact you the confirm your appointment time. You are expected to be at the Center at least 60 minutes before your scheduled surgery/procedure time, unless otherwise instructed. You may be able to complete some or all of the paperwork in advance and send these to the Center to help expedite your check-in process.
All patients must register at the Center on the day of surgery. Please bring with you all paperwork your physician may have given you, such as lab results, x-ray films, EKG, etc.
Additionally, you will also be asked to provide your insurance card along with photo identification. Further, if you are responsible for any co-payments or deductibles, please bring payment with you.
TESTS PRIOR TO AND THE DAY OF SURGERY
If your physician orders lab tests to be completed before surgery, you will need to arrange for them to be performed at your primary care physician’s office or an outside laboratory approved by your insurance company. Our Center does not perform these tests. A pregnancy test will be performed on all women of child-bearing age on the day of surgery.
We recommend drinking plenty of fluids the evening before your procedure. Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the day before your surgery unless you are specifically told to do so by your surgeon or anesthesiologist. Please do not eat or drink, smoke, or chew tobacco after midnight the night before your scheduled procedure. This includes candy, mints, and gum. Do not drink alcoholic beverages the night before your procedure. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the cancellation of your procedure.
Bring a list of any medications you may currently be taking. Check with your physician regarding which medications you may take on the day of surgery. On the day of surgery, we recommend that you take your normal complement of medicines (with a sip of water) except for blood thinners and insulin.
Please wear comfortable, loose clothing on the day of surgery. For patients having upper body/hand procedures, please wear a loose button-up short sleeve shirt. For patients having lower body procedures, please wear above the knee shorts or a skirt.
Please do not wear nail polish, makeup, lotion, jewelry, the day of surgery.
Please do not bring any valuables with you. Remove all jewelry and leave all valuables at home, including any jewelry. This includes watches and body piercings. The Center is not responsible for any lost or misplaced items.
We recommend that you bathe or shower the night before or in the morning of your procedure. This will help you feel more refreshed and reduce the risk of infection. You may brush your teeth; however, be careful not to swallow any water.
Do not apply any lotions, creams, or makeup before your arrival, as this may interfere with your procedure.
Before surgery, you will asked to remove your eyeglasses or contact lenses, as well as dentures or bridges.
We require that you arrange for a family member or friend to drive you to and from the Center and remain at the Center during your procedure. The effects of the anesthesia and surgery will prohibit you from driving. They should also plan to stay with you the first night following your procedure. For your safety, if you are unable to make arrangements for a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you, your procedure will be canceled or rescheduled.
